FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HEALTH & VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

What vaccinations are required?

For the health and safety of every dog in our care, we require all dogs to be current on Rabies, Bordetella (Kennel Cough), and DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis/Adenovirus, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus). We also require a negative fecal test performed within 5 days of your dog’s scheduled drop-off date. Proof of vaccinations and the negative fecal test must be received before your dog’s arrival.

Why do you require a fecal test within 5 days?

Unlike vaccinations, intestinal parasites can be contracted at any time. A negative fecal test within 5 days of arrival helps us prevent the spread of parasites such as Giardia, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and coccidia. Keeping every dog in our care healthy and safe.

Are you insured?

Yes. Lone Star State K9 is fully insured, giving you peace of mind while your dog is in our care.

Can my dog stay if they are taking medication?

Yes. Please bring any medications your dog needs during their stay, along with clear instructions on dosage and timing. Our team will make sure your dog’s medication routine is followed consistently while they’re in our care.

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY & METHODS

What training methods do you use?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dog training. We tailor our methods to each dog’s personality, temperament, and learning style, building on clear communication, consistency, accountability, and fair expectations. We use positive reinforcement to teach new behaviors and, when appropriate, incorporate tools such as slip leads, prong collars, or e-collars never as punishment, but simply to communicate more effectively.

What breeds do you work with?

We work with all breeds, sizes, and ages. Every dog is an individual, and we customize our approach to fit each dog’s temperament and your goals.

Do you use treats?

Yes. We use rewards to teach and motivate dogs while building clear communication and engagement. As training progresses, we transition to rewarding at appropriate times rather than for every command.

Do you guarantee results?

We guarantee professional training and give you the knowledge needed to maintain it. Lasting success depends on consistency and follow-through once your dog returns home.

Will my dog be perfectly trained when they come home?

Training doesn’t end when your dog goes home, it begins. We provide the foundation, but consistency at home is what creates lasting results. We’ll teach you how to maintain your dog’s training and set you up for long-term success.

How much practice should I do at home?

We recommend short, consistent training sessions each day. Even 10–15 minutes of focused practice can make a significant difference.

What if I have questions after training?

We’re always here to help. Our goal is to support you long after your dog’s program has ended.

Why is consistency so important?

Dogs thrive on clear, predictable communication. Consistency builds confidence, prevents confusion, and helps training become a lifelong habit.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Will my dog always need training tools?

Not necessarily. Tools are designed to improve communication and create clear, consistent expectations. As your dog’s reliability improves, many owners find they can rely on tools less or transition to simpler equipment. Though some dogs benefit from long-term use, and that’s okay too. Our goal is never dependency; it’s a dog that understands expectations and responds reliably, with or without equipment.

What happens after training is complete?

Training never truly ends. We provide the knowledge and support you need to maintain your dog’s success for years to come.

Is an e-collar humane?

When used properly, yes. An e-collar is a communication tool, not a punishment device. Modern e-collars offer adjustable stimulation levels often comparable to a muscle twitch. We only introduce them when appropriate and thoroughly educate owners on safe, humane, effective use.

Are prong collars safe?

Yes, when properly fitted and used correctly. Prong collars distribute pressure evenly around the dog’s neck, providing clear communication without direct pressure on the trachea. When used under the guidance of a knowledgeable trainer, they’re a safe, effective tool for many dogs.

SCHEDULING & LOGISTICS
What are your pickup and drop-off times?

We offer flexible appointments between 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM, scheduled in advance. We’ll reach out the day before to confirm your appointment time. Need a specific time? Let us know when booking and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

What does my dog's typical day look like?

Each day includes structured training sessions, exercise, enrichment activities, rest, potty breaks, and time to decompress. A balanced routine that promotes learning without overwhelming your dog.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible, especially during holidays and peak travel seasons, as availability can fill quickly.

Do you offer financing?

Please contact us to discuss available payment options.

PACKING & BOARDING
Can I bring my dog's own food?

Yes. We ask owners to provide their dog’s regular food to avoid digestive upset.

Can I bring toys, blankets, or bedding?

We don’t recommend it! Items can easily become damaged, lost, or misplaced during your dog’s stay. Please bring only what’s necessary.

What should I pack for my dog's stay?

Please bring: food, medications (if applicable), and any supplements.

Do you board intact dogs?

Yes! We do accept intact males and females for boarding. For the safety of all dogs in our care, intact dogs are managed appropriately!

Do you offer playgroups?

Not typically. Many dogs come to us because they struggle around other dogs reactive, fearful, selective, or simply preferring their own space. We prioritize structured exercise, enrichment, and one-on-one attention instead. On rare occasions, if we know two dogs exceptionally well, we may allow carefully supervised play, but it’s the exception, not the standard.

MORE QUESTIONS
1. What if my dog has never been away from home before?

That’s completely normal! Many of the dogs that come through our programs have never spent a night away from home. While some dogs may need a day or two to adjust to their new environment, they quickly settle into our structured routine. We make the transition as stress-free as possible by providing consistency, exercise, mental stimulation, and plenty of positive interaction. In many cases, the change in environment actually helps dogs focus and learn more effectively.

2. How will I know how my dog is progressing?

We keep you involved throughout your dog’s training journey. You’ll receive regular photo and video updates so you can see your dog’s progress firsthand. We’ll also explain what your dog is learning, celebrate milestones, and answer any questions you have along the way. Our goal is for you to feel confident and excited about your dog’s progress before they ever come home

3. What if my dog becomes sick during their stay?

Your dog’s health and safety are our top priorities. If your dog becomes ill or injured while in our care, we will contact you immediately. If veterinary care is needed, we’ll transport your dog to our vet, or to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic if immediate treatment is necessary. We closely monitor every dog throughout their stay and take any health concerns seriously

4. Can I visit my dog during a Board and Train program?

We generally do not allow visits during Board & Train. While we know it’s hard to be apart from your dog, visits can interrupt the training process and make it more difficult for your dog to settle into their routine. Our goal is to build consistency and momentum throughout the program. Instead, we’ll keep you updated with photos and videos so you can watch your dog’s progress until it’s time for their go-home lesson.

5. How do I know which training program is right for my dog?

That’s what we’re here for! Every dog is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. During your free consultation, we’ll learn about your dog’s age, temperament, training history, and the goals you have. From there, we’ll recommend the program that will give you the best results, whether that’s Board & Train, private lessons, behavior modification, or another option.
